The Secret Life of Walter Mitty //
This collage represents and captures Walter's journey and his path to find the true meaning of life. I was really inspired by the quote "Stop dreaming, start living" but decided to put my own spin on it and incorporate LIFE somehow in the final product. LIFE magazine's logo is what initially sparks Walter to take a leap of faith and find Sean O'Connell. In the process, he gradually starts to find himself, build his eHarmony profile, and start living. The vivid daydreams start to dissolve and his fantasies turn into reality.

Discuss the main character at the beginning of the film vs the end of the film.
Walter is first portrayed as a hard-working guy who lives and breathes his job because it is all he has. He goes to work in the morning and returns home at night. He isn't very confident and lets the new manager in charge order him around. As a result of Walter searching for the missing negative, he finds himself and discovers the true meaning of LIFE. By the end of the film, Walter is confident and content with the LIFE he has built. His confidence is shown when he finds the negative and decides to give it to the magazine, even though he was fired.
Discuss the importance of the “wink” and eHarmony.
The wink symbolizes Walter’s ability to get in touch with his feelings. eHarmony is a way for Walter to think through what is going on in his head. For example, when Walter calls the eHarmony guy at the beginning of the movie, he expresses his frustration with the wink feature and how it won't send one to his new love interest, Cheryl. This glitch in the system almost forces Walter to actually have a real conversation with Cheryl for the first time.
Where does Walter go in his head?
Walter goes where he would rather be. His imaginary life is based off of what other people want him to be like. When he blanks out, he re-imagines the situation to make it seem more interesting and cool.
What is a beautiful thing?
“Beautiful things don’t ask for attention," Sean O'Connell. I think this quote is important to the understanding of a beautiful thing. I didn't quite get why this quote was of an significance to the rest of the movie until the end. The missing negative, that was on the cover of LIFE's final issue, was a photo of Walter in his natural habitat, examining negatives during his lunch break. Walter never
Discuss graphic design and its integration into the cinematography.
This movie uses a lot of graphic design. A lot of the opening credits are integrated into the buildings, flooring, and moving objects. The graphic design also helps the viewers distinguish what is in Walter's head and what is real.
Why is LIFE the corporation that Walter works for? What is the importance of the motto?
I believe LIFE magazine's motto is why Walter decided to work there in the first place. He believes the motto is the reason why the magazine is so successful. Walter likes the fact that there is more to the magazine then just a collection of good photographs. “To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel.” This motto almost sums up Walter's journey to find the missing negative (and himself) perfectly.
Discuss the relationship between the old school and the new school.
The plot is centered on the LIFE magazine’s transformation into modern day. Walter’s job is “old school”, as he sorts through photo negatives for a living. Walter’s transformation as a human being brings him to realize that not all new things are better. The magazine had thrived just fine and he didn't understand why they would take all that away just to stay up with the times.
Why is Walter the way he is?
Walter has an odd relationship with his family. His sister is quirky, his mother can be overbearing at times, and his father recently passed away. I think Walter imagines these elaborate situations because in his heart he wants to be more than a negative analyst. He wants to do something greater than what his family has done but doesn't know where to start.
Discuss the role of the corporation. How is this critiqued in the film?
The corporation in the film, LIFE magazine, is put in both a positive and negative light. Walter is skeptical of LIFE trying to renew itself and believes that the corporation is more than one person. There is the bad guy who can just swoop in and change everything in the blink of an eye (the negative light) and then there is the family behind LIFE who stands strong to preserve the traditions (the positive light).
