ASSIGNMENT 3A:
RHINO STAIR
RHINO STAIR
Describe your conceptual design approach as well as how it evolved and reacted to the constraints as the project progressed.
This design was inspired by a variety of sources. I wanted to keep the staircase simple but have a component that was more ornamental, but looks structural at the same time. My final design intention was to keep it modern with straight lines (like the building) while using the ornament to bring contrast. The illusion of the staircase being pulled in two directions is created by this ornament.
What resources were most effective in assisting you in developing your modeling skills? You spatial configuration?
I looked up a lot of videos to either remind myself of tools that I could use or to learn something new entirely. There were a lot of little tweaks here and there to be figured out but conversing with fellow classmates helped with this tremendously. I had to refer back to the IBC and the Ching diagrams a lot to make sure I was sticking to the code.
Discuss the limitations of the software and what challenges it presented in the development of your design.
I don’t think there are many limitations to Rhino. I felt pretty comfortable with Rhino at the end of the semester. However, after spending a week learning SketchUp and learning the shortcuts, it was very difficult for me to get back into Rhino right away. I think this is because I have a really good short-term memory, especially when you’re repeating the same commands over and over.
What other applications do you see the software being appropriate for outside of the applications presented for this project? Use your imagination.
I see myself using Rhino to create complex and organic models: Rhino is built to do that sort of stuff. I’d prefer SketchUp when creating simple, orthogonal models.
Discuss your usage of the social media (YouTube & Facebook) reflecting on how useful each was to enable you to complete the assignment.
Social media played a big role in the development of this project. Youtube was utilized as a learning tool or to help refresh my memory. While I didn’t necessarily ask my own questions, I learned a lot from looking at other conversations (especially on the GroupMe and Facebook page. Pinterest was utilized for initial brainstorming and inspiration.
How comfortable do you feel with the software?
Every time I use Rhino, I learn something new. It is one of those programs that allows you to learn whatever you want to learn. There are so many tools that I still don’t know how to use simply because I’ve never had to!
At this point are you using some of the developed skills in other course work? Please describe.
Diagraming is one of the skills that I definitely wanted to build on during this course. I look back at some of my projects and realize that they could have been a lot stronger with better diagrams. So yes, I think all of the programs we’ve learned so far can be (and will be) utilized in other coursework.
Any comments or suggestions?
I think this was a perfect project to get back into Rhino mode while learning something new at the same time (IBC)!
