Are you starting to feel more comfortable in grasshopper?
I think I am becoming more comfortable with grasshopper, but there is still a lot of undiscovered territory. Mostly, I'd like to learn more about how to make our own "code". If I can figure out how that actually works then I will feel a lot more comfortable and will most likely use grasshopper in more future projects.
Based on the software experience thus far, discuss how you might have used some of the skills you’ve learned in your work leading up to this course.
There is no doubt that I have carried my previous experiences with me into this project, which is how it should be. If I were to have known these skills before starting this coursework, I think a lot of my projects would have turned out significantly better. Learning new techniques about diagramming and just getting your ideas across in general I think will be the most valuable tools for the future.
How comfortable are you becoming with exploring content outside the video instruction that has been provided?
I watch the instructional videos to get a general idea of the task at hand. I then try and do it on my own without referencing the video again. In the process, I make a lot of mistakes and come across a lot of tools that I wouldn't have otherwise. Most of the time I end up going back to the video just to make sure I did everything right. That being said, I am becoming more and more comfortable with exploring other content, especially if I am ahead of schedule and can make time to play around a bit.
How well is this structure of the course functioning for you? What are some of the struggles? Benefits?
For me, structure is very important. Therefore, I like the fact that there are set due dates for projects (even though it may be stressful at times). I also enjoy the journal exercises and I try to have a lot of fun with them. I see myself using some of those techniques just to do fun projects not associated with school. One of the main struggles I have is gauging how much time each task will take me. Sometimes I spend to much time on the little things when I should get the bigger stuff done first and then add more detail. I just think that comes from exploring the tools and figuring out what they can and can't do. Lastly, while this class takes up a lot of time, I think it is very beneficial for transition into 3rd year. Instead of having a full summer away from design, we're learning new things that will help us get a head start in the fall!
